Morning at Kingspan
Today Tom, Nez and Ellie attended a presentation from Kingspan at their Potton showhomes, in St Neots. Potton is part of the Kingspan group and Kingspan is something we repeatedly incorporate into our own projects. This made the presentation both interesting and useful as it gave us further insight into their systems. The presentation involved a talk on their market leading timber structural systems, a visit to their 1:1 scale model exhibition and a tour round their showhomes, including the Passivhaus; all rounded off with bacon butty and a cuppa. This gave us first hand experience of what their systems involved and therefore gives us better insight to suggest Kingspan to clients going forward, as well as filling us up.
Who and Why?
“We design, supply and create bespoke high performance low energy homes”
Kingspan are the global leader in high performance insulation and building envelope solutions. They pride themselves on their reputation and continually strive to maintain and improve this. They have been trading for over 50 years, as well as holding a Gold Standard from the structural timber association. They also work alongside Architects as part of the design time, involved in everything from the early structural appraisals to the cost controls.
The structural systems themselves are independently fire tested, BBA approved and highly insultated using their kooltherm technology. The high performance of the structure also enables them to use slim walls, which maximises the interior space. In addition to this the high u-values allow for expansive windows which are increasingly popular with clients. Kingspan also allows for a range of performances from building regulations to Passivhaus, all systems also come fully erected with warranty.
Kingspan use 3 main systems, all differing slightly in performance but still at their core following their key principles for design. These systems can be used on their own or as part of a hybrid system.
- Logic + System
This is their base system, with Part L (conservation of fuel and power) building regulation compliance. It incorporates their slim wall construction type, with their 287mm wall reaching a U-Value of 0.21 w/m2k. The logic + system is known for its affordable performance.
1.5. The Urban Logic System
The urban logic system is an offset of the Logic + but instead incorporated a magnesium oxide board and a closed panel, resulting in a more fireproof solution. Initially developed for student housing.
2. Kingspan Ultima
The Kingspan ultima is a high spec system compared to the Logic +, again it incorporates the slim wall construction with the high u values. A 312mm wall can achieve U-Values of between 0.19 and 0.17 w/m2k. It is the thinnest high performance wall available, using commonly specified material and also won the ‘Built It Awards’ prize for ‘best innovation in Insulation 2017’.
3. Kingspan TEK Building System
This system comprises of structurally insulated panels, known as SIPs. These can be used as both a super structural system but also as part of an external envelope (non-structural). The U-Values for these range from 0.1-0.2 w/m2k and is a good solution for passive levels of performance due to their robust air tightness.
3.5. Kingspan Passiv
Kingspan has also developed their TEK System to create their own passivhaus standard system. Using their slim wall construction they can achieve U Values of 0.09 w/m2k overall and air tightness of less than 0.06m3/m2hr, these both meet the requirements for Passivhaus certification.
Kingspan and TMV
We have repeatedly used Kingspan’s own insulation throughout the majority of our projects. The insulation is known as Kooltherm and has a U-Value of 0.08 w/m2k. It is the thinnest commonly used insulation which helps to achieve maximum floor space within projects. In addition it’s Class 0 surface spread of flame and ease to install means that it has been an excellent choice for us and our clients.
We have included some photos of Potton Showhomes which we visited. We hope this will give you an insight into what Kingspan can achieve and for more information please visit - https://www.kingspan.com/group/.
The Showhome is also open to the public Tuesday to Friday 9-5 and Saturday 10-4 at Mill Lane, Little Paxton, St Neots, PE19 6EF. For more information on the showhomes please visit- https://www.potton.co.uk.
